Strategic Plan

To paraphrase Mark Twain, the rumors of the demise of public libraries continue to be greatly exaggerated. However, public libraries also realize they must continue to evolve to remain vital. To that end, Plaistow Public Library is proud to announce the completion of its Strategic Plan, which will guide the library's programming and service initiatives through 2020.

The process began in the late 2016 with the creation of a Strategic Planning Committee comprised of library staff, trustees, consultants, local officials, and patrons. The committee assessed the library's services, programs, collections, spaces, staffing, open hours, and studied emerging library trends for best practices.

A core part of the strategic planning process was to conduct a town-wide survey of residents. (The survey instrument is available here.)

In August 2017, the survey was mailed out to all Plaistow residential addresses - 3,677 residences in total -  to reach both library patrons and non-patrons. An online version of the survey was also posted and distributed widely. The results benchmarked what the library is doing well and introduced new a myriad of new possibilities. The library also held an open forum to bring additional public comment.

The result of this work is a succinct document packed with actionable goals. (The plan is available for download here.)

The plan calls for proactive outreach to teenagers, single Millennials, and men of all ages, as well as the development of detailed plans for technology and marketing. It is also important to note that work is already underway for some of the goals outlined in the plan. For example, the library is the process of replacing all of its lighting with highly efficient LED fixtures, as well as rebuilding its network infrastructure with greatly improved internet speeds and wi-fi access.
